What was earlier estimated to be a $1000 + AC compressor job, turned into a $400 job instead. I took my wife's car to a "reasonable" local mechanic. (I put reasonable in quotes because they had multiple reviews on the net that gave them 5 stars out of 5.) When I got there the place was a dump. The mechanic said it would be a $1000-$1200 job with parts and labor. I immediately went home and surfed the big name chains for the compressor. They all wanted $500 or more for the compressor.
